Sorti en 1990 dans l'indifférence générale, Sentinelles marque pourtant le retour au premier plan de son auteur. Il faut attendre 1992 et la programmation en radio de « Eteins la lumière » pour voir enfin les ventes décoller.
Et pourtant, après une traversée du désert de presque dix ans, celui qu’on identifiait immédiatement au tube « Cargo de nuit » en 1983 réussit le pari de revenir avec un album à la fois rock et planant, Sentinelles, porté par le succès du morceau « Eteins la lumière ».
Si dans cette chanson, Axel Bauer recommande à son interlocuteur de lui montrer son côté sombre, c’est paradoxalement, pour le chanteur, le titre du retour à la lumière. Grâce à ses textes soignés, Axel Bauer sortait du carcan limitatif du « chanteur à perfecto » des années 1980 et pouvait enfin s’exprimer en tant qu’artiste à part entière.
