Dès la sortie de Toni Braxton en 1993, la chanteuse s’était imposée comme une référence du R&B américain. Porté par des titres très formatés comme « Let It Flow », « Un-Break My Heart » ou « You’re Making me High », Secrets rapporte un Grammy Award et plusieurs récompenses à la chanteuse, reconnue comme l’une des voix les plus efficaces dans sa catégorie. Ayant atteint la deuxième place du classement Billboard grâce à cet album, Toni Braxton semblait être au sommet de la crête du R&B, explosant alors sur les ondes FM, que rien n’aurait pu arrêter. Malheureusement pour la chanteuse, le pire restait à venir.
