Le nom rauque de l’Irlandais Rory Gallagher est pour toujours associé à l’âge d’or du blues-rock britannique. Celui qui se déguste dans un pub avec une pinte de bière à la main, pendant qu’il pleut dehors, plutôt que dans la pyrotechnie d’un stade sous les paillettes. Après une poignée d’années et une paire d’albums à la tête du groupe Taste, contemporain de Cream et Led Zeppelin et bien dans son époque, Gallagher sortait ce premier album sous son nom. En power trio sans fioritures, toujours sous influence blues-rock, mais moins enfumé et progressif qu’avec Taste. Ramené à la simplicité et à la puissance élémentaire des musiciens de blues américains. Ses riffs de guitare qui s’enflamment sur Sinner Boy sonnent comme une réponse à Johnny Winter de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique. Le jeu sobre et tranchant du groupe semble préfigurer le pub rock anglais des années 70. Les 50 ans de cet album attachant sont célébrés par une réédition remixée du disque original, accompagné de versions alternatives jusqu’alors inédites. Les morceaux les plus mordants ont gardé leurs crocs, et on pourra céder à la nostalgie en redécouvrant une paire de ballades folk-blues acoustiques où Rory Gallagher rêvait de l’Amérique de Dylan.
