Pendant la composition de cet album, Kid Rock a écouté les bons conseils du génial producteur Rick Rubin. Celui-ci a travaillé avec les Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers ou encore Aerosmith pour ne citer qu’eux.
L’influence de Rubin a sans doute quelque chose à voir avec le fait que l’album s’écoute avec beaucoup plus de plaisir que les précédents. On trouve enfin moins de vantardise et plus de sincérité – dans une moindre mesure, bien sûr : Kid Rock reste Kid Rock.
Les morceaux se révèlent donc harmonieux, versant pour la plupart dans la country et le rock, sans oublier les influences hip-hop bien aimées de Kid Rock. Il y a des morceaux assez intéressants, comme la balade acoustique « Amen » ou « New Orleans ».
Mais c’est surtout « All Summer Long » qui est efficace, pleine de joie de vivre sudiste, reprenant la superbe ligne de guitare du mythique « Sweet Home Alabama » de Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Autre nouveauté, ses chansons abordent des thèmes plus recherchés (bien qu’elles révèlent un certain côté réactionnaire sur certains points) : le racisme, la guerre en Irak, ses amours malheureuses avec l’actrice de seconde zone Pamela Anderson, la foi, Jésus bien évidemment, etc.
Mais rassurons-nous, les allusions sexuelles chères à Kid Rock sont toujours présentes dans toute leur vulgarité. Pas de grande originalité pour cet album, mais l’on sait gré à Kid Rock d’avoir fait un effort d’élégance.
