Après le lumineux Mind Control en 2007, Stephen Marley sort son deuxième album solo avec Revelation Part 1: The Root of Life. Le propos d'ensemble est effectivement orienté reggae roots, mais un son roots largement revu à la sauce 2011.
Ainsi sur « Made in Africa », le rap se mélange à un tempo nyiabinghi et à une guitare hispanisante, le titre donne une sorte de suite à Distant Relatives de Damian Marley (par ailleurs présent ici) et Nas. « False Friends », « Can't Keep I Down » et son harmonica, « Break Us Apart » sonnent comme du Bob Marley and The Wailers 2011. Impression renforcée par la présence du multi-instrumentistes Aston Barrett, Jr., fils de Aston "Family Man" Barrett et visiblement dépositaire du skank sacré dans ses veines.
Pour « No Cigarette Smoking (In My Room) » Stephen Marley prend une voix sciemment enfumée, « Jah Army » noie d'échos un riddim volontairement martial, « Old Slaves » renvoie au mento pour rappeler les temps pas si anciens de la servitude du peuple venu d'Ethiopie. « She Knows Now » donne dans la légèreté, avec la voix de Stephen Marley qui a par instant la tonalité exacte de celle de son père.
Album extrêmement bien construit et produit, Stephen Marley étant une référence en la matière, Revelation Part 1: The Root of Life peine cependant à vraiment enthousiasmer, il manque pour cela quelques titres plus tranchants, une rage que n'exprime pas un Stephen Marley trop bien né et à qui il manque la vraie expérience du ghetto qu'avait son père et ses acolytes.
