Relish fit le bonheur de Mercury, chez qui venait de signer Joan Osborne après avoir joué dans les bars et cafés de New York et sorti deux albums sur son propre label. A cette époque où l’industrie du disque ne connaissait pas la crise, la major s’est effectivement frotté les mains. Certes, il contient le tube planétaire « One Of Us » mais si cet album a eu une longue durée de vie (plus de trois millions d’albums vendus sur plusieurs années), c’est parce qu’il possède d’autres atouts qui le rendent intemporel.
Ainsi « Help Me » (de Sonny Boy Williamson), « Dracula Moon » et le superbe « Crazy Baby », sont autant de démonstrations de l’amour que porte l’artiste aux grands noms du blues électrique. Elle en donne ici un compte rendu, à la fois moderne et authentique, très enthousiasmant. Quoi de plus normal quand on sait que Relish évoque (littéralement) la saveur et le plaisir ?
Cette autodidacte, nourrie à la soul et au rhythm’n’blues (évident sur un titre comme « Ladder »), a trouvé aux côtés de son producteur Rick Chertoff et de ses musiciens, de vrais complices avec qui elle a fabriqué des écrins idéaux pour sa voix riche, à la fois forte, maîtrisée, et teintée de ce grain bluesy qui la rend sensible et attachante.
Pour un début de carrière, Joan Osborne n’a pas volé ses sept nominations aux Grammy awards entre 1996 et 1997, et cet album reste, à ce jour, le meilleur de sa discographie éclectique.
