Signé chez Shady Records, le label de son mentor Eminem, Yelawolf est aussi blanc que son alter ego. Radioactive, le premier album de ce rappeur originaire d’Alabama (Etats-Unis) ressemble d’ailleurs à s’y méprendre à ce qu’a pu faire Eminem à ses débuts, à savoir un rap « WASP » ou « white trash » très ancré dans le rejet social, le constat socio-culturel d’une classe américaine blanche qui revendique –souvent à juste titre- les mêmes déceptions, colères, sentiments d’injustice, que ses confrères « black ».
Le titre « Made in the U.S.A » en est l’exemple parfait : flow acéré, textes incisifs et souvent inspires, instrus qui n’oublient pas le potentiel dancefloor de la manœuvre.
La recette Yelawolf a déjà été élaborée par d’autres, mais est ici plus que bien réalisée. « Let’s Roll », avec Kid Rock aux chœurs, sonne aussi comme un hymne « white trash » typiquement américain, ce pan de la société de l’Oncle Sam finalement souvent aussi oublié que son pendant minoritaire… Avec Radioactive, Yelawolf livre un premier opus convaincant, jusqu’au-boutiste. Une réussite.
