Sous sa pochette rouge et noire dépouillée à l’extrême, R. est un sommet de R&B moderne et cependant traditionnel. S’appuyant sur une voix souple et très à l’aise dans les ballades, R. Kelly, mélodiste inspiré et arrangeur raffiné, enchaîne les chansons « d’oreiller » comme à la parade.
Car son talent unique et de savoir se répandre dans ces ballades déchirantes, ces slows moites et bourrés de testostérone, qui plaisent avant tout à un public féminin un peu plus mature, mais aussi délivrer des bombes à dance-floor, efficaces et visant le public plus adolescent.
Dans R., c’est quand même la première option qui reste majoritaire ; c’est un double album de slows en pure soie qui va rencontrer l’assentiment de la nation. Même quand il convoque des rappeurs, le tempo reste lent et les ambiances boisées. Sommet d’une carrière qui a l’allure d’une chaîne de montagne, R. est un somptueux disque de musique sensuelle.
