In a world of strange collaborations, this has to stand as one of the most unusual. Marchand, from Brittany, has shown a fascination with Romanian music for some time now, and this mix with Taraf de Carancebes (as well as cimbalom player Alexia Cabana) brings it to full fruition. For the most part it's the kind of rapid-tempo material that's dominated Balkan music for several years, demanding on the music and utterly exhilarating for listeners. Then they'll throw in a slow ballad with some gorgeously emotive singing from Marchand just to prove that it doesn't all have to be manic. But how well do Brittany and Romania sit together? To get an answer, all you need to do is listen to "Talvoudegez Ar Feiz." The changes in tempo and time are all irresistibly smooth but fabulously exciting. Even if there's no surface connection between the cultures, Marchand discovers one on a deeper level, making for a remarkable and satisfying disc.
