Les fans ne pouvaient l’envisager, les observateurs zélés auront beau l’avoir prédite, la nouvelle de la séparation d’R.E.M. le 21 septembre 2011 a été accueillie avec stupeur. Le groupe avait traversé des tempêtes mais s’en était à chaque fois relevé plus fort, préférant au fil des ans, l’intelligibilité à la quête de renouveau.
Après la publication du prémonitoire Collapse Into Now, c’est donc avec ce Greatest-hits Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage que le groupe d’Athens tire sa révérence en 2011. Un adieu décrit comme aussi « difficile » que « libérateur », par Michael Stipe lui-même.
Ce n’est pas la première fois que R.E.M. est compilé. La discographie du groupe est émaillée de trois Best-of officiels et autant de sorties donnant l’occasion de faire le point - Lives, raretés et autres « faces-B » inédites. L’originalité de cette véritable rétrospective chapeautée par Buck (qui l’a baptisée) Mills et Stipe, est qu’elle réunit les titres publiés à la fois au cours de leur première vie sur le label IRS et au cours de leur seconde chez Warner. Cette réunion de catalogue ponctue en outre un contrat qui avait fait couler beaucoup d’encre en 1996 (80 millions d’euros, le plus onéreux jamais signé par une maison de disque à l’époque).
Quarante singles qui permettent de revoir au ralenti toutes les vies et les visages de ce groupe charnière du rock américain, depuis l’émouvant « Gardening at Night » extrait du premier EP sorti en 1982. Le reste est un alliage de fougue et d’introspection personnelle, car R.E.M. est un groupe que l’on aime aimer à sa manière.
Réécouter « Talk About The Passion » nimbé de mystère, et replonger dans les souvenirs flous et bouleversants d’un amour naissant, en 1983. Se remémorer Fables of the Reconstruction (1985) grâce à l’introduction en arpèges cristallins de « Life and How To Live It ». Se replonger dans les chroniques des années 1980 où l’Amérique avait cessé de croire à ses légendes et ses leaders politiques avec le rageur « Begin The Begin » et le désabusé « Fall On Me » de l’album Lifes Rich Pageant (1986). Les ballades incontestables ou les tubes qui appartienent désormais plus à la mémoire collective qu’au groupe (« Everybody Hurts », « Nightswimming », « Losing My Religion »).
On peut s’étonner de l’absence insensée de titres comme « Drive » ou « Lotus » (le premier fut le single ouvrant leur chef d'oeuvre Automatic for the People en 1992 ; le second fut extrait de Up, en 1998, album de la renaissance injustement sous-évalué). On appréciera la force de cet « Hallelujah » inédit qui clôt l'histoire. Mais, finalement, ce que l’on retiendra de R.E.M. c’est une pop intergénérationnelle et riche de sens. Reconnaissable entre toutes bien que n’ayant jamais cessé d’évoluer. C’était cela le talent de Berry, Buck, Mills et Stipe lorsqu’ils se réunissaient pour écrire des chansons. De très bonnes chansons, inspirées des mythes populaires et modernes. Une œuvre, en somme.
