Le citoyen d’honneur de Pittsburgh a été touché par le doigt du destin combiné à la chance en devenant une star instantanée dès son premier album dont le propos consistait à chanter les louanges de l’herbe qui fait rire et de l’argent qui permet d’en acheter tout plein. Depuis, il est devenu un poids lourd qui pour parfaire son statut a récupéré une ex-fiancée voyante de Kanye West dont il aimerait bien avoir la moitié des idées et du caractère, même notoirement ombrageux.
Hélas, il n’est qu’un entertainer besogneux, un rappeur jetable, pur produit de ce qu’est devenu le genre dans les années 2000. Pour continuer dans cet enchaînement de titres à clubs et à clips YouTube, il n’a guère d’autre choix que de se payer des featurings à foison, quasiment un par titre ou presque. Akon, Cam’ron, Pharrell Williams, sa dulcinée Amber Rose donc (et dont ce n’est manifestement pas le métier) pour les plus voyants et une cohorte de seconds couteaux parmi lesquels on remarque Lola Monroe sur le pétillant « Initiation », sans guère de doute le meilleur moment de l’album.
Avec des disques à succès, des tournées sold out et une panouille au cinoche, les « MC’s air du temps » ont vite fait de se croire sortis de la cuisse de Jupiter. Cet O.N.I.F.C. (Only Nigga In First Class !) joue son rôle à fond, n’évoquant que les thèmes annoncés dans son liminaire Rolling Papers : herbe, ambition, argent, réussite, rien de nouveau sous le soleil. Quant à la musique, cette party music au kilomètre avec chœurs R&B, beats convenus plutôt lents et absence totale d’idée car on ne mettra pas sur ce compte courant les quelques tentatives d’habillage electro de saison, elle est désespéramment prévisible.
Wiz Khalifa fait ce qu’il sait faire sans se rendre compte que ses efforts sont vains. C’est certes passer pour une vieille barde de suggérer à sa fan base (adolescents consommateurs de musique par clips sur internet et footballeurs de ligue 1) de chercher à découvrir ce qu’était le rap, même festif, dans les années 1980 et 1990. Mais il y a parfois des urgences.
