Lorsque Yellowcard sort pour la première fois un album chez une major, il est loin de se douter du succès colossal qui l’attend. Ocean Avenue deviendra double disque de platine aux Etats-Unis en s’écoulant à plus de 2,5 millions d’exemplaires.
Le groupe de Jacksonville (Floride) installé en Californie laisse derrière lui ses influences punk hardcore pour proposer un album punk destiné au grand public. Son succès tient également au fait qu’il associe le violon au punk, un rapprochement osé mais qui s’avère payant.
Ocean Avenue est un condensé de punk pop qui donne irrésistiblement envie de prendre sa planche et de surfer sur les vagues californiennes. Yellowcard rassemble des titres énergiques, mélodiques et efficaces (« Way Away », « Breathing », « Ocean Avenue », « Miles Apart ») mais également des balades pop (« Empty Apartment », « Only One », « Back Home »), le tout bien calibré pour les radios des campus américains.
Le groupe maîtrise parfaitement sa recette mais il a tendance à se répéter. En conséquence, Ocean Avenue restera dans les annales du Billboard mais pas dans celles du rock…
