Neuvième album de Little Big Town en vingt ans d'existence, Nightfall est sans doute celui qui se rapproche le plus de l'une des influences majeures du groupe, à savoir Fleetwood Mac. La formation reconnue pour ses harmonies vocales à la Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young use à bon escient de ce savoir-faire qu'elle développe le long de mélodies à tendance country pop.
Avec l'aide de Daniel Tashian succédant à Jay Joyce au poste de producteur, Little Big Town excelle dans ce registre de ballades crépusculaires à la manière du morceau-titre ou de morceaux accrocheurs comme « Sugar Coat » et « The Daughters », premier extrait après le single « Summer Fever » de 2018 (non inclus) et l'album précédent The Breaker (2017). Au milieu de Nightfall, le groupe de l'Alabama sert deux ballades aux thèmes similaires, ceux de l'abandon, de la solitude et de l'alcool consolateur, « Wine, Beer, Whiskey »
et « Over Drinking », à ne pas confondre avec « Day Drinking » abordé cinq ans plus tôt.
Dans la même veine, « Questions », « Problem Child » et « Trouble with Forever » donnent à Nightfall accentuent ce sentiment de désespoir dans les voix des quatre membres se relayant au chant. Cependant, tout n'est pas sombre dans l'univers de Little Big Town, qui distille des touches musicales variées venues du gospel sur « Bluebird » ou du style tex-mex sur « Wine, Beer, Whiskey ». Production réussie de treize titres sélectionnés entre tous, Nightfall n'égale cependant pas des prédécesseurs comme les disques de platine de référence Tornado (2012) et Pain Killer (2014), mais il consolide la place de Little Big Town parmi les groupes de country les plus populaires de sa génération.
