L’album de la consécration pour les écossais de Simple Minds. New Gold Dream leur apporte en effet du succès aussi bien critique que commercial. Le groupe réussi à perfectionner son identité sonore avec des guitares et des synthétiseurs grandissants ensembles harmonieusement. L’atmosphère obtenue est décrite par le chanteur Jim Kerr comme une « dance music ambiante » dans laquelle les claviers n’agressent pas l’auditeur mais l’entoure pour mieux l’emporter dans des sonorités new wave. Le pianiste de jazz Herbie Hancock effectue un solo sur la chanson Hunter and the Hunted.
