Pour certains, Nevermind est sans doute le dernier vrai chef d’œuvre de l’histoire du rock. Chef d’œuvre au sens de disque fédérateur, pour ne pas dire LE disque d’une génération… En 1991 pourtant, certains se demandent pourquoi la planète entière va s’emparer de cette bombe nucléaire de rock’n’roll, punk dans l’âme, pour la transformer en véritable phénomène. Après un premier disque cinglant (Bleach), beau retour au punk basique passé à la moulinettes de sonorités distordues et métalliques, Kurt Cobain affute sa plume et son sens de la mélodie : Smells Like Teen Spirit évidemment mais aussi le raz-de-marée électrique de Territorial Pissings, le fielleux Come As You Are, le folk troublant de Poly ou le bipolaire Lithium, tout est perfection, destructeur pour le corps, renversant pour l’esprit… L’organe lancinant de Kurt Cobain fait corps avec sa prose désespérée et la batterie de Dave Grohl résonne comme autant de directs au plexus.
