Hannah Hooper, Christian Zucconi, Sean Gadd, Andrew Wessen et Ryan Rabin ont une énergie à couper le souffle. D’abord celle de fonder un groupe malgré des membres dispersés aux quatre coins des Etats-Unis et de l'Angleterre. Puis celle d'écrire, de composer et même d’enregistrer un album dans les mêmes conditions. Cette énergie se ressent tout au long de leur premier opus, Never Trust A Happy Song.
Et c’est bien là leur plus grande qualité. Quand les cinq membres de Grouplove doivent décrire leur musique, ils se contentent de dire qu'ils souhaitent juste « se faire plaisir ». Ce qui est charmant, mais le plaisir peut aussi ne pas être partagé par tous... En effet, les douze morceaux de l’album se partagent entre des redites d’Arcade Fire (« Itchin’ on a Photograph »,« Close your Eyes and Count to Ten ») des réminiscences des Pixies (« Colours »,« Betty’s Bomb Shell ») et des échos des Black Kids (« Tongue Tied », « Spun »), parfois tous en même temps, mais sans la fraîcheur et la surprise qui accompagnaient jadis les artistes précédemment cités.
Heureusement, Grouplove sait se faire aimer. La sincérité, l’émotion, l’entrain, eux, persistent dans chacun des titres ici proposés. Ne se contentant pas d’être pop ou rock, contournant avec habileté les poncifs du mainstream et de l’alternatif, ils réussissent à attraper l’auditeur dans leurs filets – grâce à un sémillant jeu de guitare et au joli duo de voix formé par Hannah Hooper et Christian Zucconi. Enfin, il faut le concéder à ce jeune groupe, son enthousiasme est forcément communicatif.
