Hybrid Minds

Comprised of producers Matthew Lowe and Josh White, English duo Hybrid Minds weave deft drum work, emotive vocals, and soaring synths into their unique strain of liquid drum'n'bass. Amid a continual cycle of live sets and festival appearances, the pair issued the studio albums Mountains (2014), Elements (2017), and Tides (2024), securing a major foothold in the genre with their emotionally charged sound. Meeting as collaborators on radio station Ruthless Soundz during the late 2000s, DJs and producers Matthew Lowe (under the alias Sensa) and Josh White (alias Haste) started the passion project Hybrid Minds as a shift away from the heavier, floor-filling sounds that dominated their live sets. Debut single “The Place,” released under Sensa & Haste, found immediate success through online platform UKF; though the track was eventually scrubbed from the site due to an uncleared sample, its hundreds of thousands of streams gave the duo their first taste of international acclaim. Taking the alias of Hybrid Minds, the pair were quick to get to work, issuing their official debut single, “Lost,” and the EPs Hybrid Minds and Heartfelt in 2012. Their iconic decagon logo was debuted on the cover art of 2013’s “Meant to Be,” ahead of the release of their first major body of work, the 2014 album Mountains. Coming in at 15 tracks, the pair's full-length debut marked the first concrete display of the "Hybrid Minds sound": resonant synths and ballad-like vocals gave their work an emotional weight, a trait that would become the backbone of their sound through the 2010s and beyond. After releasing the 2015 EP Lifted, Lowe and White found their biggest hit to date with 2016’s “Touch,” a collaboration with London-based vocalist Catching Cairo. The multi-million-stream hit, issued as the first release on the duo’s newly founded label, Hybrid Music, became the lead single for their sophomore album. The resulting LP, 2017’s Elements, offered a continuation of their cathartic signature sound, with contributions from frequent collaborators like Grimm, Charlotte Haining, and Linguistics. A stream of further singles -- notably 2018’s “Inside,” “Tapestry,” and “Supernova” and 2019’s “In Your Arms,” “Higher Love,” and “Drowning in You” -- continued their momentum through the end of the decade. Now an established heavyweight in the liquid drum'n'bass scene, the duo embarked on a run of club nights and live sets through the early 2020s, alongside issuing a steady flow of singles and EPs. Among the highlights were the cohesive Reflections EP (2021) and singles “Castles” (2022) and “If Love Could Have Saved You,” in collaboration with Tom Walker and Venbee, respectively. The 2024 EPs Delete Our Love and Kites experimented with multiple versions of new material for the duo’s third studio album; March's Tides, the finalized LP, fused both EPs into a body of new material, and became the first of the duo's albums to chart in the United Kingdom.
