Alto saxophonist Marcus Monteiro's debut as a leader is an ambitious effort that simply tries too hard. Until the loops are added in the opening track, "Resemblence" sounds like a dated piece of fusion from the 1970s. The church-like keyboards introducing the mournful "Love Text" find the leader somewhat in the background, utilizing reverb. His rendition of Paganini's Caprice No. 18 shows off his chops, though the plodding percussion behind him and the special effects wear thin quickly. It is obvious that Marcus Monteiro has incredible abilities on his instrument, but making his music accessible to a wider jazz audience may prove to be a bigger challenge.
