It's easy to complain when a major label screws up, one could write a book about all of the talented artists who have been victimized by corporate politics and bad decisions, or all of the A&R people who forced artists to work with the wrong producer and made them record material that was totally wrong for them. But when a major label does right by an artist, it should get credit, and, for the most part, Capitol did right by Tavares. Thanks to Capitol, Tavares hit the ground running (both creatively and commercially) with its debut album of 1973, Check It Out. And all of its subsequent Capitol releases were either decent or excellent. Tavares' seven-year stay at Capitol ended with 1980's Love Uprising, which was produced by Benjamin Wright. While Wright had produced three songs on Tavares' last album, Supercharged, he handles all of the producing on Love Uprising. Under Wright's direction, the Tavares siblings deliver a vinyl LP that is enjoyable but not mind-blowing. All of the material is decent -- none of it is bad, but none of it is fantastic either. Unlike Hard Core Poetry, Check It Out, and In the City, Love Uprising isn't among Tavares' essential albums and isn't recommended to casual listeners. But it's worth searching for if you consider yourself a hardcore fan of the group.
