Le R&B est certes revenu à la mode à la fin des années 2010, il n’est pourtant jamais facile pour les vétérans du genre de s’adapter à ses nouvelles sonorités. Sur son neuvième album en trente années de carrière, Angie Stone a peut-être bien trouvé la recette pour faire du neuf avec du pas si vieux. Elle respecte les codes de la sensualité d’antan, conserve son amour pour les instruments acoustiques hérité de ses débuts dans le sillage de D’Angelo ou plus largement du collectif Soulquarians, tout en y incorporant des rythmiques qui fleurent bon Atlanta sur Kiss You et Good Man, ou en faisant retentir les basses gong. Cet équilibre est dû à sa volonté en premier lieu, mais également aux quatre architectes de ce Love Language, à savoir Walter Millsap III, Xavier Gordon, Balewa Muhammad et Candice Nelson. La cohérence globale est frappante, sculptée pour les amateurs du genre, ceux qui ont grandi dans l’affection pour les sonorités cheesy mais qui aiment entendre le R’n’B aller vers l’avant. Comment imaginer cependant qu’Angie Stone a 61 ans au moment de sortir cet album ? Voix évidemment intacte, thèmes d’une jeunesse intarissable, arrangements recherchés… L’amour, exprimé sur le magnifique morceau High, est bel et bien une seconde jeunesse. @Brice Miclet/Qobuz
