Que peut-on attendre de New Order après le départ de Peter Hook pour différends musicaux avec son collègue de trente ans Bernard Sumner ? L'avenir le dira mais en attendant sort ce mini-album de huit titres, Lost Sirens, à la pochette et à l'intitulé impeccables.
Huit titres inédits ? Pas tout à fait puisque « Hellbent » faisait déjà partie de la dernière compilation Total et que « I Told You So » était présent dans une version différente du dernier album en date, Waiting for the Siren's Call paru en 2005 et dont les séances fructueuses donnent lieu à cette nouvelle salve très attendue. De ce fait, Lost Sirens représente la dernière trace de New Order avec Peter Hook. Un New Order aux visages bien différents entre les morceaux à dominante rock comme « Hellbent » et « I'll Stay With You » faisant tourner le moteur à plein régime grâce à des guitares incisives et une autre moitié plus mitigée renvoyant à l'époque baléarique (« Sugarcane ») ou à une pop assez mièvre de « I've Got A Feeling ».
D'entre toutes ces tendances auxquelles il faut ajouter de brèves réminiscences de son glorieux passé à travers la litanie ensorcelante de « I Told You So » et l'indéfendable « Shake It Up » où un riff fait oublier l'affreux refrain, New Order en ressort avec une disparité d'inspiration qui fait aussi sa richesse. Le vrai nouvel album attendu dira si le groupe a su renaître une troisième fois de ses cendres.
