Ce deuxième album de Kate Bush – sorti neuf mois seulement après le premier – débute paisiblement par une ballade idyllique dont les premiers accords rappellent la douceur des Gymnopédies de Satie, tandis que le titre évoque évidemment George Gershwin (Symphony in Blue). Autrement dit, après The Kick Inside, ce sont une nouvelle fois les arts du passé qui hantent la chanteuse anglaise. In Search of Peter Pan, le deuxième morceau de Lionheart, fait, quant à lui, écho à la personnalité hors-norme de Kate Bush, sorte de petite fille "piégée" dans le corps d’une adulte soprano. Précisons qu’elle n’a que 19 ans lorsque cet album paraît et que la plupart des titres ont été composés bien avant la mise en route de l’album (elle a commencé très jeune à développer des dons pour la chanson).
Enregistré près de Nice en un temps record et produit par Andrew Powell (qui s’était déjà occupé du précédent), Lionheart comprend de nombreuses références au monde du spectacle, comme les films d’horreur de la Hammer (Hammer Horror, sorte de prolongement du film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, sorti trois ans auparavant). Et dans le très évanescent Wow, elle rend un hommage vibrant à un acteur homosexuel. Rappelons à ce propos que Kate Bush était déjà une icône gay à l’époque et que la chanson Kashka from Baghdad parle d’un couple d’hommes dont la relation doit rester secrète. Musicalement, on retrouve la folie douce, élégante et mélodiquement alambiquée qui a fait sa réputation.
