Quickly reminding listeners of the Bevis Frond, Mantler's Landau soon defies categorization, taking listeners on a whirlwind of precise sounds and downbeat themes. Still, this album is remarkably lighter than its predecessor, Sadisfaction. The ten songs on Landau showcase Chris A. Cummings' remarkable craftsmanship and dedication to songwriting. Produced by longtime friend Zack G., who also adds guitar and backing vocals, the album has a title that hints at Cummings' intentions to serve as a musical carriage-driver through modern music. Standouts include the shimmering indie pop of "Playin' Along," the disco-ready "Togethernest," and the plodding, seductive tempo "Outside the Arcade." The ten-song effort closes with the warm and fanciful poetry of "Brook and River." Though the lyrics may hint otherwise, the songs here exude an overwhelming sense of calm and serenity. Dennis Frey adds vocals to three songs, but Cummings is virtually a one-man band, crafting compelling and soothing pieces to the puzzle. Tomlab Records released the disc in 2004.
