One of Cuba's most revered musicians, Beny Moré deserves the title "King of Son," but he certainly doesn't deserve the shoddy treatment he receives on this collection. Consisting of a five-track hits collection (slotted last), a five-track set of crude demos recorded near the end of his life, and five tracks of remixed hits, The King of Son portrays Moré in terrible light. The remixes aren't completely alien -- the hardest swinging Cuban big bands sometimes approach a tight, mechanistic rhythm akin to drum machines -- but there's precious little room for subtlety during these unsympathetic remixes.
