Dans le défilé des chanteuses à peine jazz, à peine folk, à peine blues, à peine pop, Madeleine Peyroux est une voix unique. Car sa voix est unique. Des parents hippies, une jeunesse à New York, en Californie puis à Paris, c’est on the road que cette native d’Athens en Georgie, a façonné son organe. Plus exactement, dans la rue. Son école à elle : sous les pavés, la classe ! Dans l’instabilité d’un tel contexte, elle puise son style unique, comme sorti d’un vieux poste à galène. Une voix qui dégage avant tout une nostalgie inédite. Timbre, courbes, diction et nonchalance, aucune amertume, juste un voile de mélancolie. L’instant où la fameuse comparaison avec Billie Holiday fait logiquement son entrée… Madeleine Peyroux, c’est aussi la grande tradition oubliée de l’interprète. Comme les maîtres (Elvis, Emmylou, Ella…), elle s’approprie tous les répertoires possibles : Patsy Cline, Edith Piaf, Tom Waits, Elliott Smith, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Serge Gainsbourg ou bien encore Billie Holiday. Avec cette impeccable compilation intitulée Keep Me In Your Heart For A While (par ailleurs le titre d’une chanson de Warren Zevon qu’elle reprend ici et qui est l’unique pièce inédite de l’album), ce sont deux décennies d’une carrière sans faute de goût qui défilent entre nos oreilles.
