Amusante cette tendance récente des guitaristes de jazz à se pencher sur le répertoire country. Après Bill Frisell, c’est au tour de Sco de revisiter quelques grands classiques de la musique préférée des garçons vachers. Dans ce foisonnant répertoire, le guitariste originaire de l’Ohio a opté pour la crème de la crème et son Country For Old Men propose des reprises d’I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry d’Hank Williams, Mama Tried de Merle Haggard, Jolene de Dolly Parton, Faded Joy de Bob Wills, Mr. Fool de George Jones, Bartender's Blues de James Taylor (qu’avait brillamment repris George Jones) et même des friandises plus récentes comme You're Still The One de Shania Twain. Pour réinterpréter ses merveilles, John Scofield s’est entouré de vieux complices : Larry Goldings au piano et à l'orgue Hammond, Steve Swallow à la basse et Bill Stewart à la batterie. Sco avait déjà revisité du Buck Owens et du Charlie Rich avec ces mêmes complices. Là, il déshabille ces compositions pour en faire le terrain d’intenses échanges.
