Reading, PA's John Flywheel released its national debut on the independent Backstreet label in 1995 after honing its live chops for years on the small Reading club circuit. Wisely, the trio recorded its eponymous debut more or less as a live band, with minimal production adornments, thereby emphasizing its live strengths. John Flywheel sounds like a tougher R.E.M. or Smithereens, mixing indie pop jangle with AC/DC-style power chord riffing. Hooky songs like "You Just May Be the One" suggest the influence of power poppers like Cheap Trick -- a component which adds just the right amount of melodic sweetness to the group's no-frills rock.
