On peut être le roi (ou, selon l’expression du principal intéressé, « la reine mère ») des tubes pop et, malgré tout, avoir dans sa besace des chansons qui n’ont pas eu la chance de connaître un illustre destin. Entre les disques consacrés aux faces B (1976-2005) et ceux comprenant la sélection des titres préférés d’Elton John, ce coffret exhume une armée de morceaux qui étaient plus ou moins tombés dans l’oubli. Parmi cette sélection, on trouvera un nombre non négligeable de ballades dans lesquelles le piano – la béquille de « Rocketman » – tient une place prépondérante (Blues for My Baby and Me, Where to Now St. Peter?, Chameleon…). Mais ce trésor de huit disques contient également des inédits complets, comme les démos des premières années, qui ont cimenté la collaboration Elton John/Bernie Taupin. On dit que ce dernier était réticent à l’idée de déterrer ces chansons, à cause de « leur naïveté ». « A cette époque, je faisais vraiment semblant », ajoute-t-il. Gageons que les vrais fans n’auront cure de cet état d’âme. On retiendra notamment Regimental Sgt. Zippo, enregistré en 1968, conçu comme un clin d’œil à l’album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band des Beatles. Si cette boîte à musique riche et scintillante met en lumière ce qui était tapi dans l’ombre, elle ne pouvait faire l’impasse sur certains tubes, dans leur version originale. C’est donc avec les chansons mentionnées dans les mémoires d’Elton John (comprenant quelques incontournables comme Song for a Guy) que se conclut cette exploration d’un catalogue hors-norme. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

On peut être le roi (ou, selon l’expression du principal intéressé, « la reine mère ») des tubes pop et, malgré tout, avoir dans sa besace des chansons qui n’ont pas eu la chance de connaître un illustre destin. Entre les disques consacrés aux faces B (1976-2005) et ceux comprenant la sélection des titres préférés d’Elton John, ce coffret exhume une armée de morceaux qui étaient plus ou moins tombés dans l’oubli. Parmi cette sélection, on trouvera un nombre non négligeable de ballades dans lesquelles le piano – la béquille de « Rocketman » – tient une place prépondérante (Blues for My Baby and Me, Where to Now St. Peter?, Chameleon…). Mais ce trésor de huit disques contient également des inédits complets, comme les démos des premières années, qui ont cimenté la collaboration Elton John/Bernie Taupin. On dit que ce dernier était réticent à l’idée de déterrer ces chansons, à cause de « leur naïveté ». « A cette époque, je faisais vraiment semblant », ajoute-t-il. Gageons que les vrais fans n’auront cure de cet état d’âme. On retiendra notamment Regimental Sgt. Zippo, enregistré en 1968, conçu comme un clin d’œil à l’album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band des Beatles. Si cette boîte à musique riche et scintillante met en lumière ce qui était tapi dans l’ombre, elle ne pouvait faire l’impasse sur certains tubes, dans leur version originale. C’est donc avec les chansons mentionnées dans les mémoires d’Elton John (comprenant quelques incontournables comme Song for a Guy) que se conclut cette exploration d’un catalogue hors-norme. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
