Critiqués par le côté commercial de Nevermind et d'Incesticide, les gars d’Aberdeen proposent en 1993 In Utero, génial mélange de pop énervée et de rock. L’esprit grunge est bien présent et c’est avec délectation que l’on retrouve des titres d’une justesse rare comme dans «Serve the servants», qui ouvre le bal sur le mal être adolescent et les rapports déçus avec le père. Bien que méconnue, cette chanson met en exergue la voix juste de Kurt et la complicité du trio musical.

Sur «Scentless Apprentice», Dave Grohl fait montre de maîtrise dans un exercice à la batterie très exigeant : un titre qui pouvait durer 12 minutes sur scène, joué dans une tension des plus palpables avec un Cobain prêt à exploser à tout moment. «Heart Shaped Box» ne peut quant à lui pas s’évoquer sans les images de son clip vidéo, joliment travaillé, traitant de la maladie, thème que connaît bien Kurt Cobain, lui qui souffre de brûlures impossibles à l’estomac.

D’autres chansons comme «Rape me», «PennyRoyal Tea» avec un hommage explicite au song writer Leonard Cohen, ou «All Apologies» sur lequel Cobain fait profil bas, sont autant de titres connus de cet album lui aussi incontournable. Malgré le mécontentement de Cobain, insatisfait du mixage de l’album, In Utero reste un projet abouti, un hommage à toutes les formes du rock’n’roll ; il montre la palette élargie du talent de Nirvana, entre énergie, douceur, simplicité et profondeur. Les chansons ne perdant jamais leur poids en live, bien au contraire.

Chronique

Critiqués par le côté commercial de Nevermind et d'Incesticide, les gars d’Aberdeen proposent en 1993 In Utero, génial mélange de pop énervée et de rock. L’esprit grunge est bien présent et c’est avec délectation que l’on retrouve des titres d’une justesse rare comme dans «Serve the servants», qui ouvre le bal sur le mal être adolescent et les rapports déçus avec le père. Bien que méconnue, cette chanson met en exergue la voix juste de Kurt et la complicité du trio musical.

Sur «Scentless Apprentice», Dave Grohl fait montre de maîtrise dans un exercice à la batterie très exigeant : un titre qui pouvait durer 12 minutes sur scène, joué dans une tension des plus palpables avec un Cobain prêt à exploser à tout moment. «Heart Shaped Box» ne peut quant à lui pas s’évoquer sans les images de son clip vidéo, joliment travaillé, traitant de la maladie, thème que connaît bien Kurt Cobain, lui qui souffre de brûlures impossibles à l’estomac.

D’autres chansons comme «Rape me», «PennyRoyal Tea» avec un hommage explicite au song writer Leonard Cohen, ou «All Apologies» sur lequel Cobain fait profil bas, sont autant de titres connus de cet album lui aussi incontournable. Malgré le mécontentement de Cobain, insatisfait du mixage de l’album, In Utero reste un projet abouti, un hommage à toutes les formes du rock’n’roll ; il montre la palette élargie du talent de Nirvana, entre énergie, douceur, simplicité et profondeur. Les chansons ne perdant jamais leur poids en live, bien au contraire.
