« So American », chante John Gourley, et ce dès les premières minutes de cet album - en effet empreint de culture américaine. Attention cependant, il ne s’agit pas d’une déclaration chauvine à la Sarah Palin, originaire d’Alaska tout comme Portugal. The Man.
Ici, c’est le sacro-saint rock psychédélique qui est convoqué, baignant de ses lumières chatoyantes (et ô combien réconfortantes) des guitares sous acide et des claviers tremblants d’excitation. Ce n’est pas « Floating » et ses chœurs en « oh oh oh » fédérateurs qui enfreignent la règle de Portugal. The Man. Ni le manifeste libertaire « Got It All », dont l’alliance fantasmagorique de cordes montre que la leçon donnée par Robert Plant et Jimmy Page a été bien apprise et, qui plus est, parfaitement digérée. « Senseless » poursuit dans cette voie afin de laisser « Head Is a Flame (Cool With It) » ou « Everything You See (Kids Count Hallelujahs) » poursuivre le voyage (le trip, pourrait-on même dire) en compagnie de MGMT et autres hippies sur le retour.
Plus vaporeux et plus pop, « You Carried us (Share With Me the Sun) » obéit à la loi de la ballade. Or, au moment où l’auditeur s’est totalement immergé dans le cocon psychotrope de In the Mountain In the Cloud, le propos se durcit et s’épure sur « All Your Light (Times Like These) ». « Once Was One » et le grandiloquent « Share Me With the Sun » concluent avec élégance et force violons débridés ce paradis sonore à tendance artificielle. La production, pop moderne au possible, est assurée par John Hill (Santigold, M.I.A.) et son immédiateté est renforcée par le format volontairement court des titres de l’album, dont aucun ne dépasse les 4 minutes 20.
Ingénieusement alliée au chant haut-perché de Gourley, l’instrumentation réinvente les formules magiques des sixties californiennes tout en faisant quelques clins d’oeil à l’espièglerie pince-sans-rire de la britpop des années 1990. Le tout bénéficie d’un son à la limite de la perfection, ni trop brumeux ni trop clair, un son mixé par Andy Wallace, à qui la planète rock doit le Nevermind de Nirvana ou le Grace de Jeff Buckley – rien que ça. Sixième album mais premier arrivé en terre française, In the Mountain In the Cloud mérite le détour et réclame à corps et à cri qu’on s’y attarde, ne fut-ce qu’un peu (45 minutes, est-ce beaucoup demander ?) afin de profiter comme il se doit du voyage.
