How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb montre U2 sous le jour de son rock le plus simple, le plus direct et le plus carré avec peu de subtilité et de nuances en matière de production, de performances et de paroles. C’est parfois au détriment du groupe, mais la production brute peut constituer un avantage, le son du groupe gardant toute son étendue et sa puissance. Les U2 restent d’habiles artisans, capables de créer des disques aux accroches mélodiques et sonores sensationnelles et nombreuses sur HTDAAB, avec des sons rassurants comme dans la légèrement mélancolique "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own", dans l'envolée de "City of Blinding Lights" ou dans la percutante "All Because of You".
