Une belle histoire qui a commencé il y a dix ans déjà pour Florence + The Machine par le single Kiss with a Fist qui soulignait un certain féminisme et un caractère de battante. Pour son quatrième album High as Hope, l’Anglaise rentre clairement dans la cour des grands avec une pop toujours aussi inclassable qui pioche dans le rock, la soul ou encore les arrangements baroques. Elle produit elle-même cette dernière création avec la participation d’Emile Haynie, notamment producteur de Bruno Mars, Eminem ou encore Kid Cudi. Autant dire qu’avec Florence Welch il ne s’est pas trompé de cheval ! La voix extraordinaire de la chanteuse est sur High As Hope à son apogée.
On passe de la mélancolie à la rêverie sans efforts. On alterne entre douces vocalises lyriques et bruits de gorge perturbants. Un piano qui sonne le glas sur Big God puis tout un orchestre qui prend vie sur No Choir. Avec des cordes, des claviers et surtout deux invités de talents, Sampha et Jamie xx de The xx l’intensité est à son comble. Welch fait de sa musique un univers sauvage et fantastique où l’on aime se perdre. Sur dix titres, elle aborde une thématique générale qui n’est autre que son rapport à l’art et les vides qu’il a pu remplir dans sa vie. Des vides creusés par sa dyslexie, son anorexie ou encore une personnalité addictive et une sexualité perturbée. De son allure d’écorchée vive, Florence parvient à accoucher d’une création musclée, chargée d’émotions et assume ce double personnage, vulnérable et dominant à la fois. © Anna Coluthe/Qobuz

Une belle histoire qui a commencé il y a dix ans déjà pour Florence + The Machine par le single Kiss with a Fist qui soulignait un certain féminisme et un caractère de battante. Pour son quatrième album High as Hope, l’Anglaise rentre clairement dans la cour des grands avec une pop toujours aussi inclassable qui pioche dans le rock, la soul ou encore les arrangements baroques. Elle produit elle-même cette dernière création avec la participation d’Emile Haynie, notamment producteur de Bruno Mars, Eminem ou encore Kid Cudi. Autant dire qu’avec Florence Welch il ne s’est pas trompé de cheval ! La voix extraordinaire de la chanteuse est sur High As Hope à son apogée.
On passe de la mélancolie à la rêverie sans efforts. On alterne entre douces vocalises lyriques et bruits de gorge perturbants. Un piano qui sonne le glas sur Big God puis tout un orchestre qui prend vie sur No Choir. Avec des cordes, des claviers et surtout deux invités de talents, Sampha et Jamie xx de The xx l’intensité est à son comble. Welch fait de sa musique un univers sauvage et fantastique où l’on aime se perdre. Sur dix titres, elle aborde une thématique générale qui n’est autre que son rapport à l’art et les vides qu’il a pu remplir dans sa vie. Des vides creusés par sa dyslexie, son anorexie ou encore une personnalité addictive et une sexualité perturbée. De son allure d’écorchée vive, Florence parvient à accoucher d’une création musclée, chargée d’émotions et assume ce double personnage, vulnérable et dominant à la fois. © Anna Coluthe/Qobuz
