Ce quatrième album studio est un petit chef-d’œuvre d’orfèvrerie pop. Il est d’ailleurs produit par Steve Lillywhite, célèbre pour peaufiner le moindre détail : les guitares piquées aux Byrds de « Hard Candy », l’instrumentation luxuriante de « Butterfly Reverse » (co-écrite avec Ryan Adams, le nouveau pote du moment d’Adam Duritz), tout ici respire l’efficacité, voire la surprise, la joie (l’entraînant single, « American Girls »).
On a presque du mal à reconnaître le groupe intimiste découvert en 1993 avec le sombre August and Everything After… Même « If I Could Give All My Love », sous-titré « Richard Manuel Is Dead », vibrant hommage au génial pianiste et chanteur du Band, ne sombre pas dans le pathos…
Un album brillant, dans tous les sens du terme. Presque un peu trop, parfois. Suivant les éditions, en plus des treize titres de base, on a droit à un ou plusieurs bonus, parmi lesquels des covers enlevées du « Big Yellow Taxi » de Joni Mitchell ou du « You Ain’t Going Nowhere » de Dylan, preuve que les Counting Crows ne renient pas leurs origines.
