Lorsqu’elle a sorti son EP Tina Show en 2018, peu de gens auraient prédit que Megan Thee Stallion deviendrait un blockbuster musical deux ans plus tard. Sauf que la qualité attise la curiosité. Après avoir été prise sous l’aile de Cardi B et avoir signé chez 300 Entertainment, elle a enchaîné 2019 avec l’album Fever, acclamé par la critique, puis 2020 avec Diamond et WAP, deux singles poids lourds qui ont ouvert la voie au vrai coup de force : cet album, Good News. Un parcours exemplaire, sans faute, bien marketé et pensé. En même temps, les talents bruts ne s’égarent pas. Avec une telle ascension sans accroche, on pourrait penser que Good News serait un album à Grammys, une collection de hits en puissance. Pourtant, son aspect brut et trap, ses instrus faites de TR-808 hurlantes (Do It on the Tip, Movie), en font un savoureux exutoire entrecoupé d’idées en pagaille. En trouve un titre presque disco-funk avec Don’t Rock Me to Sleep, un superbe rap sous sample de soul pitché avec Circles (qui sample Holding You Down de Jazmine Sullivan), des prods industrielles comme sur Don’t Stop en featuring avec l’inévitable Young Thug… Finalement, il y a quelque chose de profondément rétro dans cet album, surtout dans ces instrus synthétiques très typées 2000 comme sur Sugar Baby. La place à l’électronique brute est grande, très grande, et, paradoxalement, humanise le phénomène Megan Thee Stallion. Qui n’a pas fini de grandir. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
