Golden State paraît en octobre 2001 sur le label Atlantic Records. Petit problème : la marque de fabrique, ultra grunge, de Bush, tombe ici dans l’anachronisme culturel. Golden State, ou comment resservir une bonne soupe dont plus personne ne veut. Là où des vétérans du grunge comme Pearl Jam savent merveilleusement se renouveler au fil des années, Bush enfonce le clou et poursuit sa ligne directrice avec un entêtement touchant, mais parfois douteux. Ainsi, Golden State n’a que peu de bons titres à proposer. Nos oreilles s‘arrêtent néanmoins sur le single « The People That We Love » (initialement nommé « Spedd Kills », titre mal senti juste après le 11 septembre new-yorkais…), morceau énergique et épique, sans doute l’un des meilleurs titres de Bush depuis ses débuts. Sorti de ce moment de bravoure, peu de belles surprises… « Solutions » et « Hurricane » tirent tout de même leur épingle du jeu : Gavin Rossdale y pose sa voix de manière subtile, et les mélodies retrouvent leur panache, perdu sur le précédent album du groupe, The Science of Things. Au final, Golden State ne laisse pas un souvenir impérissable. Bush se séparera d’ailleurs quelques mois plus tard, sentant bien que la sauce ne prend plus.
