Riche et célèbre, Billy Joel n’en est pas moins considéré par un auteur de chansonnettes par la critique et ses pairs. La « pop music » est en plein chambardement à l’orée des années 1980, le courant d’air du punk rock a été bénéfique, et beaucoup de musiciens américains étiquetés « variétés » comme on dit en bon français élèvent le ton et produisent une musique plus énergique, orchestrée et mixée au cordeau et façonnée pour les radios FM par le sorcier Phil Ramone.
Billy Joel hausse le ton lui aussi, dans ce remarquable Glass Houses (sur l’illustration de pochette il s’apprête à balancer un gros caillou dans une baie vitrée – sa propre maison de verre -, tout un symbole…). « You May Be Right » qui débute l’album montre aussitôt la voie : Billy Joel ne plaisante pas et ça va chauffer. Le terrible texte de « Sometimes a Fantasy » le suit, et il faut le troisième titre, « Don’t Ask Me Why », semblant tout droit sorti du catalogue de mélodies de Paul McCartney, pour retrouver un auteur compositeur et superbe pianiste familier. On passera sur son essai en français sur « C’était toi » à la limite du grotesque, et on retiendra ce « All for Leyna » taillé pour les stades qu’il écume sur le territoire américain, et le n°1 « It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me » sa profession de foi, où il tente de nous convaincre que toute chanson rythmée contemporaine est aussi du rock ‘n’ roll comme dans les années 50.
