Le jour des élections présidentielles américaines de 2020, Jason Isbell a rêvé de voir sa Géorgie chérie (il est né en Alabama) passer dans le camp démocrate. « Ça m’a donné l’idée d’enregistrer un album de chansons parlant de la Géorgie et d’en reverser les bénéfices à une organisation locale à but non lucratif. », reconnait ce maître de l’americana. « J’avoue que mes motivations étaient un peu égoïstes. En fait, j’ai cherché une excuse durant des années pour enregistrer ces chansons avec mon groupe et quelques amis. » Le résultat est un tracklisting volontairement hétéroclite qui aurait même pu l’être davantage (« J’aurais adoré reprendre Outkast et 2 Chainz, mais le résultat n’aurait pas été très bon… »).
Pour Georgia Blue, Jason Isbell et son gang, The 400 Unit, se sont donc concentrés sur ce qu’ils savent faire le mieux. Du rock, du country rock, du blues, du rhythm’n’blues et de la soul. On croise des compositions signées Cat Power, Precious Bryant, James Brown, Black Crowes, Gladys Knight, Drivin N Cryin, Otis Redding, Indigo Girls et R.E.M., toutes reprises avec l’aide d’amis allant de Béla Fleck à Amanda Shires en passant par Brittney Spencer, Adia Victoria, Brandi Carlile, Julien Baker, Chris Thile, Steve Gorman, Peter Levin et John Paul White.
