Pour un coup d’essai, ce fut un coup de maître… Certes, le cerveau de Garbage n’est pas un bleu lorsque parait le premier album éponyme du groupe en 1995. Le rock’n’roll conçu par le producteur américain Butch Vig (celui-là même Vig (aux manettes du Nevermind de Nirvana !) et chanté par l’Ecossaise Shirley Manson déroulent un impressionnant chapelet d’influences : grunge, métal, punk, shoegazing, pop et electro, difficile d’encager ce disque surpuissant aux mélodies redoutables. Pourtant, le disque n’a rien d’un collage artificiel. Sur des couches de guitares saturées façon My Bloody Valentine (Supervixen), Butch Vig dépose des touches d’électro ou de rythmes funky (Queer). Et lorsque l’atmosphère se détend, Garbage abat la carte plus urbaine et noctambule (Stupid Girl). Un grand disque post-grunge bien en phase avec l’état du rock au milieu de la décennie 90. © CM/Qobuz
