Un disque étonnant que From the Choirgirl Hotel. Sophistiqué, sombre, cet album transporte l'auditeur dans un monde ténébreux et violent, avec, de ci de là, quelques rayons de lumière.
Après avoir exploré les instruments classiques les années précédentes (piano et clavecin), Tori Amos s’attaque ici à l’électronique et aux synthétiseurs. Accompagnée de ses musiciens fétiches (notamment Andy Gray, Steve Caton et Matt Chamberlain) elle compose un album plus agressif que les précédents, évoquant la perte et le chagrin (Tori Amos a fait plusieurs fausses couches avant l’enregistrement, mais donnera naissance à une fille en septembre 2000) où le Bösendorfer, sans disparaître complètement bien sûr, laisse la place aux guitares, percussions et machines diverses.
Même sa voix est parfois retravaillée pour obtenir un son guttural rappellant PJ Harvey (« She’s Your Cocaïne »), Tori Amos poursuit le virage artistique entamé avec Boys for Pelé, paru deux ans plus tôt : son style oscille entre les grandes envolées lyriques voire extatiques (« Black-Dove (January) »), les ballades intimistes (« Jackie’s Stength ») et les chansons au ton quelque peu plaintif (« Iieee »). Elle sait aussi produire un son plus pop rock avec « Raspberry Swirl », par exemple. Elle révèle ainsi, peu à peu, l’étendue de son talent, tout en continuant son introspection.
Disponible au printemps 1998, ce quatrème album est, pour la première fois, enregistré à domicile, dans le sud de l’Angleterre. Elle gardera d’ailleurs cette habitude pour les disques suivants, ce qui lui permet de contrôler ses créations du début à la fin. Pour résumer, une ligne mélodique cohérente, des musiciens complices et efficaces, des textes toujours autant ciselés (mais parfois difficilement compréhensibles, même pour les anglophones) font de ce disque l’un des meilleurs de Tori Amos.
