En 2023, Bob Dylan continue à ranger ses affaires avec la publication du 17e volume de ses archives discographiques, consacré à l’album de son grand et sombre retour dans les années 90, Time Out of Mind. Il y avait 11 titres sur l’album original, et il y en a 60 sur cette version plus anthologique que fragmentaire. Bien sûr, tout n’est pas indispensable et certaines nuances échapperont aux étudiants en première année de dylanologie. Les plus diplômés apprécieront le nouveau mix de l’album original, débarrassé des quelques effets de production vaporeux proposés par Daniel Lanois à l’époque, pour retrouver le son du groupe tel qu’il sonnait en live.


Le parti pris permet de remettre de la rusticité dans le chant de Dylan, mais réfute un peu trop vite la finesse du travail de Lanois. Les choses sérieuses se déroulent sur le deuxième et le troisième disque, qui panachent de magnifiques démos antérieures à l’enregistrement officiel, des versions alternatives et cinq chansons non retenues pour Time out of Mind (Mississippi fera son chemin jusqu’à l’album suivant, Love and Theft). Le disque suivant présente le versant live de Time out of Mind entre 1998 et 2001, avec le même groupe qu’en studio et un jeu de bonne tenue, mais une qualité sonore qui donne souvent l’impression d’entendre les chansons depuis le bar au fond de la salle.


En bonus qualitatif mais non exclusif, le cinquième disque reprend 12 titres live et studio, déjà sortis en 2008 sur Tell Tale Signs, le huitième volume des Bootleg Series. Plutôt que cette vertigineuse boucle temporelle qui donne à réentendre des raretés déjà sorties, on préférera revisiter les trois premiers chapitres de cette collection, balade en zigzags dans une americana crépusculaire qui signait à l'époque le grand retour de Dylan dans la lumière. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
