La folie Wicked Game a beau avoir plus de 25 ans dans les gencives, Chris Isaak sait encore joliment trousser une ballade rock, mi-crooner, mi-country, comme le prouvent les chansons de ce First Comes The Night. Avec ce douzième album, le Californien sexagénaire poursuit son éternelle et fascinante relecture du son des 50’s et des 60’s, alternant entre roucoulade à faire tomber les pin-ups et titres nettement plus up-tempo. Une esthétique old school et vintage avec laquelle il fait toujours autant d’étincelles. Enregistré à Nashville et produit par Paul Worley (Dixie Chicks, Lady Antebellum, Martina McBride), Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Shooter Jennings) et son fidèle Mark Needham, ce disque n’est pourtant pas totalement ancré dans la country. Comme à l’accoutumée avec ce fils spirituel d’Elvis et de Roy Orbison, on croise du rockabilly, des mélodies tex-mex, de la guitare twang, un nuage de pedal steel, du cha cha cha et du surtout rock’n’roll (avec plus de roll que de rock). Enregistré à Nashville et produit par Paul Worley (Dixie Chicks, Lady Antebellum, Martina McBride), Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Shooter Jennings) et son fidèle Mark Needham, ce disque n’est pourtant pas totalement ancré dans la country. Comme à l’accoutumée avec ce fils spirituel d’Elvis et de Roy Orbison, on croise du rockabilly, des mélodies tex-mex, de la guitare twang, un nuage de pedal steel, du cha cha cha et du surtout rock’n’roll (avec plus de roll que de rock).
