The Umbrellas are determined to look back for their future. This crafty, twee Bay Area quartet nods towards Postcard Records, Belle & Sebastian and another California musical sway, the Paisley Underground, with its exuberant jangle pop. The pairing of Matt Ferrara and his Morrissey-like baritone voice with bassist Morgan Alice's sweeter touch—with occasional cameos from drummer Keith Frerichs—is at the center of their second full length album's appeal, and rolling drums, quick verses and bright choruses add to the overall, irresistible bounce. In "Goodbye"—with Alice taking the lead in singsong choruses—the eventual coiling of voices exemplifies what this band does best. Ferrara's baritone complements the regretful, drawn out lines of "Say What You Mean": "Say what you mean/ But don't say it mean/Bad love / It's time for understanding/ And it's time for us to know." "Toe the Line" takes things at a gallop before descending into a flurry of garage rock distortion. And there are moments where the lyrical focus widens to more than just the tribulations of love, as in Gone: "Is life/ Just a fleeting feeling/ Of never knowing why/ I want what I want?" Even though their influences are obvious, the Umbrellas succeed as a pop force of their own. © Robert Baird/Qobuz
