Théoriquement un groupe de rap, les Black Eyed Peas ont recours à tant de formes de composition et de production que les cataloguer dans le style hip-hop reviendrait à cantonner Prince au R&B : certes, une vérité sur le plan technique, mais ô combien restrictive. Elephunk, le troisième opus du groupe, est l'une des productions qui a su repousser encore plus loin les frontières du hip-hop contemporain et (en grande partie) non-commercial, comme ont su le faire Common et OutKast. C'est aussi le premier album dans lequel on entend Fergie, d'abord intervenu comme chanteur invité pour devenir ensuite l'un des membres les plus populaires du groupe. Tel des Digital Underground contemporains, Black Eyed Peas savent concocter un morceau festif et ajouter une ou deux rimes débilissimes ("Balance ta tête comme un épileptique" du morceau pertinemment intitulé "Let's Get Retarded" (Devenons retardés).
