Et de 10 pour Son Volt ! Avec Electro Melodier, la bande Jay Farrar creuse avec la même détermination le sillon d’une americana intègre (pas intégriste) et sans fioriture. Un bel album attachant à défaut d’être surprenant… Entre 1987 et 1994, Farrar et Jeff Tweedy chevauchaient un canasson nommé Uncle Tupelo, l’une des plus belles montures de l’americana du siècle dernier. À l’heure du divorce, Tweedy s’en alla monter Wilco, Farrar se lançant dans l’aventure Son Volt…
Des années plus tard, la vitalité du combo de Jay Farrar reste intacte, et les valeurs du songwriter quinquagénaire de l’Illinois identiques. Comme l’opposé de Tweedy qui a pour sa part beaucoup expérimenté avec Wilco… Avec Mark Spencer, Chris Fame, Mark Patterson et Andrew DuPlantis, Farrar fait de ce dixième Son Volt, un traité d’authenticité musicale. L’alliage parfaitement équilibré entre rock’n’roll, country et folk, porté par sa plume toujours aussi poétique. On pense la chose indolore mais, au fil des écoutes, les chansons restent, s’incrustent et deviennent franchement fascinantes. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
