Alex Ebert et sa bande de doux dingues ont de la suite dans les idées. Loin d'essayer de surfer sur le succès de son titre « Home » qui l'a révélé au grand public en 2013, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros reste droit dans ses bottes de sept lieues et fidèle à son rock psychédélique passablement agité des neurones.
C'est malheureusement là que le bât blesse avec une musique trop directement sortie des années 1970. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros semble avoir du mal à dépasser les outrances de la génération Woodstock et produit un son proche de la caricature des années hippies. La référence pour Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros est de toute évidence Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band de The Beatles, comme en témoigne rapidement « Let's Get High » qui résume l'album et son propos.
Loin d'être dénué de qualités vocales avec ses aigus de chamane en transe, Alex Ebert fait penser fortement à un autre halluciné notoire en la personne de Devendra Banhart. Du coup, on ne peut pas dire que l'écoute d'Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros soit une torture. On se laisse même volontiers aller à s'imaginer dansant autour d'un feu de camp avec une chemise indienne bariolée et un foulard fleuri dans les cheveux (longs les cheveux). Choeurs, distorsions, tambourins, et autres échos créent un climat qui aurait indéniablement plu à Love ou au Jefferson Airplane.
Le grand reproche que l'on peut adresser à Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros est de trop vivre dans le passé, là ou un MGMT avait su adapter l'esprit du psychédélisme à une approche musicale actuelle. De ce fait, cet album homonyme en forme de manifeste apparaît comme un objet un peu désuet que l'on écoute avec une tendresse teintée d'ironie.

Alex Ebert et sa bande de doux dingues ont de la suite dans les idées.
