Fille du Sud (des États-Unis, s’entend), Madeleine Peyroux a pourtant grandi entre Brooklyn, et un très parisien Quartier Latin, lieux magiques où le jazz n’est jamais très éloigné du blues, et la musique des images qu’elle génère. Et c’est exactement le cas de Dreamland, premier album d’une chanteuse qui y tente de réinjecter les effluves et inspirations de l’immédiate après-guerre (la première), au sein d’une acception plus contemporaine.
Dès les premières mesures de « Walkin’ After midnight » (ouverture du disque, mais presque autant profession de foi), le constat est clair : la débutante dispose d’un avantage et d’un inconvénient majeur, et ils sont identiques. Peyroux bénéficie (?) en effet d’une voix, et d’une approche (immédiate et distancée à la fois) très proche de celle de Billie Holiday, ce qui ne manquera pas de la desservir, tant l’inconscient collectif apprécie peu que l’on manipule ses icônes.
Pourtant, Dreamland est un très bon album, et une introduction talentueuse à un univers complètement original. Trois des invités à la fête (le saxophoniste James Carter, qui n’est jamais aussi pertinent que lorsqu’il ne se produit pas en leader, l’aventureux guitariste Marc Ribot, et Leon Parker, aux percussions, et batterie, sans doute les plus inventives de l’époque) sont gages de la richesse de l’interprétation. D’autant que Peyroux a choisi de changer d’accompagnements à chaque pièce, variant ainsi, de manière habile, les climats.
Quelques choix judicieux de répertoire (une reprise du « I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter » de Fats Waller, le « Lovesick Blues » qui fit les très riches moments des concerts de Bessie Smith, ou, justement, un « Gettin’ Some Fun Out Of Life » emprunté à Billie Holiday) démontrent que la dame a du goût, et la sensibilité pour offrir un nouvel éclairage à ces incunables. D’autant qu’elle enfonce le clou, en clin d’œil à sa jeunesse française, en interprétant tout en délicatesse « La Vie en rose » (elle persistera et signera sa francophilie en visitant, dix années plus tard, « La Javanaise » de Serge Gainsbourg).
Enfin, et contrairement à ses immenses prédécesseurs, l’Américaine nous gratifie de trois compositions personnelles (dans lesquelles elle s’accompagne avec ferveur à la guitare). Dreamland annonce une carrière en dehors des sentiers battus (en particulier faite de longs silences inexpliqués entre les sessions), et, partant, riche en émotions.
L’album connaîtra un honnête succès dans les charts américains, et dans la catégorie des découvertes et autres jeunes talents.
