Ayant depuis 1978 enchaîné les albums et les réussites majeures à un rythme similaire à celui d'un Stephen King au rayon livres, il était inévitable que Prince connaisse un essouflement tôt ou tard, chose faite avec un Graffitti Bridge de 1990 en demi-teinte, premier échec commercial certes relatif mais faisant craindre le pire à ses très nombreux fans. Pourtant c'est un Prince revivifié qui retrouve le chemin des bacs dès 1991 avec Diamonds and Pearls, bien décidé à corriger le tir en embrassant l'air du temps, mettant sur pied une nouvelle mouture du New Power Generation, intégrant de nouveaux éléments rap et frappant fort avec une poignée de hits dont "Cream", l'imparable et osé "Gett Off" ou encore "Money Don't Matter 2 Night", morceau parmi les monuments trop souvent oubliés d'un catalogue princier qui reprend dès lors de l'élan comme en atteste l'album O(+> publié l'année suivante.
