Singer/guitarist Carla Olson is a veteran of the American roots-rock scene, springing from her work in the 1980’s combo the Textones. British guitarist Mick Taylor, of course, is a veteran of the U.K. blues scene and a former member of the Rolling Stones. Olson has a way with an insidiously catchy melodic hook and winsome yet gutsy singing, while the underrated Taylor knows his rock and blues licks backwards and forwards. They may seem an unlikely pair but they’ve played together for years, and Taylor’s streamlined, biting guitar is a fine complement to Olson’s earnest, blue-collar tales of yearning and struggle. DARK HORSES finds these kindred souls personalizing the spirit, if not the letter, of the blues.
