Après deux albums exceptionnels bien que relativement semblables, on s’attendait à une évolution avec le troisième, Curtains , en 1997 : il n’en fût rien, la pression des tournées n’ayant d’autre bénéfice qu’une amélioration des textes, la musique et l’atmosphère demeurant intactes.
Le groupe semble tourner en rond malgré une recette éprouvée, comme en témoigne l’interminable ballade autobiographie « Ballad of Tindersticks ». L'enregistrement se passe d'ailleurs très mal, l'osmose entre Stuart Staples et David Boulter battant de l'aile. Une version orchestrale de « A Marriage Made in Heaven » sorti précédemment en single en 1993, figure en bonus track du CD et dans la collection de raretés Donkeys 92-97, un curieux duo de Stuart Staples avec l’actrice Isabella Rossellini.
Le renouvellement nterviendra deux ans plus tard, avec l’épatant Simple Pleasure.
