Devenu un creuset d’influences allant au-delà de son electro originel, l’œuvre de Gorillaz, créature synonyme de liberté totale pour Damon Albarn, est de retour en 2023, trois ans après Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez. Adepte des invitations inattendues, le compositeur en réserve à nouveau de belles puisqu’au cours de cette dizaine de saynètes pop-funk-electro, il accueille des invités variés tels que Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac), Thundercat (ex-Suicidal Tendencies), l’inclassable Beck, le groupe indie rock Tame Impala, ou encore le rappeur portoricain Bad Bunny. La cohérence est maintenue par la production millimétrée de Greg Kurstin, et le fait que les invités se fondent avec délectation dans un univers musical parfois éloigné du leur, comme Stevie Nicks dont le grain de voix chaud irradie « Oil » ou Tame Impala à son aise dans un G-Funk confortable. La palme revient au céleste « Possession Island » qui met en lumière la complémentarité entre Beck et Damon Albarn.
